The Ruined Bride

The grand marble manor hall of the Sterling family was supposed to host the wedding of the century. Lit by elegant glass chandeliers that cast a warm, golden glow over hundreds of high-society guests, the venue screamed opulence. But the fairy tale shattered the moment the heavy double doors swung open. Instead of a pristine, blushing bride, Ashley stumbled into the hall looking like a survivor of a natural disaster.

Her expensive, custom-made white strapless gown was completely caked in thick, dark mud. Her blonde curls were damp and tangled, and her face was streaked with dirt and tears. Outside, the black carriage horses that had spooked and tipped her into a roadside ditch stood panting, held by shocked grooms. The entire assembly of wealthy onlookers gasped in unison, a wave of whispers rippling through the crowd.

At the altar stood Richard, her wealthy fiancé. Instead of rushing to her side with concern, Richard’s face twisted into an expression of cold disgust. He let out a sharp, mocking laugh that echoed off the high marble walls.

"Look at you," Richard sneered, loud enough for everyone to hear. "You look like a common street beggar. You’ve ruined the most important day of my life."

Ashley stood frozen, the humiliation burning hot in her chest. But then, her eyes drifted to a supportive marble pillar near the entrance. Leaning casually against it was Jesse, a tall, rugged cowboy in his early thirties. Jesse was her childhood sweetheart, the man she had left behind to save her family from financial ruin. He wasn't laughing. Instead, he watched her with a knowing, subtle smirk.

That smirk was all it took. It reminded her of who she used to be—strong, independent, and unbroken. The spell of Richard’s control shattered instantly. Ashley threw her hands in the air and screamed in wild frustration:

"I am done!"

She turned her back on the altar, her mind made up. She was walking away.
