The gymnasium was transformed into a fairytale wonderland, illuminated by the warm, amber glow of delicate string lights and draped in lush, hanging ivy garlands. Upbeat music filled the air as laughter echoed off the polished wooden floors. Fathers in sharp suits spun their daughters, dressed in colorful gowns, around the basketball court. It was the annual Father-Daughter Dance, a night of pure magic for every young girl in town. Except for eight-year-old Emma.

Emma stood completely solitary in the center of the court, illuminated by a harsh spotlight that seemed to highlight her isolation. She wore a beautiful blush pink chiffon dress, her light brown hair carefully woven into a French braid, topped with a delicate floral crown. But instead of smiling, her eyes were filled with tears. She looked down at her small patent-leather shoes, her shoulders shaking with silent sobs.

"Dad, why didn't you come?" she whispered in a trembling voice, wiping away a hot tear that rolled down her cheek.

Around her, the world seemed to move in slow motion. Other girls laughed as their fathers lifted them into the air, but Emma remained frozen. She squeezed her eyes shut, wishing with all her heart that her father, David, would burst through the double doors. She whispered a quiet plea to the empty space beside her.

"Please, come with me."

Miles away, David was screaming until his voice went hoarse. He was trapped in the cold, windowless basement archive of the manufacturing plant where he worked. The heavy steel security door was locked from the outside. David hammered his fists against the metal, his heart hammering against his ribs. He knew exactly who had done this. His supervisor, Richard, who was also his ex-wife’s wealthy new husband, had sent him down here right before his shift ended, promising it would only take a minute. It was a setup, and David was running out of time.
