The Accusation in the Library

The mahogany-paneled library of the Sterling mansion had always felt intimidating, but on that rainy Tuesday afternoon, it felt like a courtroom. Anna knelt on the cold hardwood floor, her arms wrapped tightly around her six-year-old daughter, Chloe. The little girl was weeping, her tiny shoulders shaking with fear, sensing the immense danger hanging in the air. Above them stood the people Anna had served faithfully for five long years.

Beatrice Sterling, the wealthy matriarch of the estate, stood tall near the crackling fireplace. Clad in a luxurious burgundy velvet gown, her face was twisted in a mask of cold fury. She stepped forward, pointing a sharp, manicured finger directly at Anna.

"You stole from us!"
Beatrice shouted, her voice echoing off the high, book-lined walls.

Anna felt a wave of panic wash over her.

"I would never betray this family,"
she cried out desperately, her voice cracking with emotion.
"I have done nothing but work honestly to provide for my daughter!"

She looked up at David, Beatrice’s thirty-three-year-old son, who stood nearby. He wore a dark charcoal crewneck sweater, his arms crossed tightly over his chest. In the past, David had always been kind, offering warm smiles and polite conversation. But today, his eyes were devoid of any sympathy. He flatly refused to meet her gaze.

"Just get her out of here,"
David stated, his voice completely cold.

Beside him, James, the silver-haired butler who had run the household for three decades, stepped forward impassively. With a narrow, calculating look, he held up a security tablet. On the screen, a monochrome security feed played. It showed a figure in a blue maid's uniform—identical to the one Anna wore—stealing Beatrice's priceless diamond necklace from her jewelry drawer.

"Get out. No excuses,"
Beatrice commanded coldly. Without another word, James escorted the sobbing mother and daughter out into the torrential rain, locking the heavy gates behind them.
