A Perfect Dream Shattered

The historic stone church was bathed in the warm, golden glow of the afternoon sun. I adjusted the collar of my US Army service uniform, my heart hammering against my ribs, but for all the right reasons. Standing beside me was James, looking incredibly handsome in his blue US Air Force flight suit. We had survived deployments, long-distance strain, and the chaotic nature of military life. Today was our victory lap.

As the chaplain pronounced us husband and wife, a wave of relief washed over me. We turned toward the congregation, hand-in-hand, and began our walk down the aisle. The applause was deafening. A massive American flag hung behind the altar, representing the shared duty that had brought us together. James squeezed my hand, a brilliant smile spreading across his face, and for a fleeting moment, I believed nothing could ever go wrong.
