The Girl Outside the Window

The afternoon sun beat down on the bustling downtown sidewalk, but Clara felt entirely frozen. She stood in front of "Vows & Veils," the city's most exclusive bridal boutique, wearing a faded, tattered denim jacket and her dark brown hair tied back in a messy, hurried ponytail. Her eyes, however, were locked onto the window display. Behind the pristine glass stood a breathtaking white lace gown, its intricate floral patterns catching the light. It was a masterpiece of design, elegant and timeless.

Overcome with emotion, Clara stepped closer, her worn fingers gently touching the cold glass.

"What a beautiful dress!"
she whispered, a tear escaping and tracing a path down her dust-smudged cheek. For a fleeting second, she wasn't a woman struggling to find her next meal; she was just a dreamer admiring art.

The spell was brutally broken when the heavy boutique door swung open. Victoria, the store's elegant manager, stepped out onto the pavement. Dressed in a flawless dark grey designer dress, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, Victoria looked at Clara with immediate disdain. She didn't see a human being; she saw an eyesore ruining her storefront.

"Please leave,"
Victoria said, her voice dripping with icy condescension.
"You are making our customers uncomfortable."

Clara shrank back slightly, but she couldn't tear her eyes away from the lace gown.

"I just want to try on that dress,"
she pleaded softly, her voice trembling with a mixture of hope and desperation.

Victoria let out a sharp, mocking laugh that echoed down the street. She gestured toward the boutique's interior, where several wealthy clients were watching and giggling behind the glass.

"You?! Try on that dress?!"
Victoria sneered.
"You couldn't afford the thread used to stitch it. Get lost before I call security."
