A Mother's Worst Nightmare

The sterile, fluorescent lights of the emergency room buzzed with a cold, uncaring energy. Melissa clutched her chest, her black blazer stained with rainwater, as she watched the chaotic scene unfold before her. On the cold metal gurney lay her three-week-old adopted son, Toby. Just an hour ago, he had been peacefully sleeping in his crib. Now, his tiny chest was barely moving, and his face had turned a terrifying, pale blue.

"No, oh my god, please!" Melissa screamed, her voice cracking with pure terror. She hunched over the gurney, her dark brown hair falling forward as tears streamed down her cheeks. "Please save my baby! Do something!"

Beside her, Martha, a veteran nurse in her mid-sixties with stark white hair, worked frantically to attach monitoring leads to Toby’s tiny body. The heart monitor emitted a flat, agonizing tone. Martha looked up, her eyes wide with urgency as she screamed toward the doorway. "Help him, do something!" she yelled, her voice filled with panic.

The door swung open, and Dr. Robert Vance rushed into the trauma room. He was a seasoned pediatrician, known for his calm under pressure. But as he stepped up to the gurney and reached for the infant, his entire body suddenly went rigid. He stared down at Toby's face, his eyes locking onto a small, crescent-shaped birthmark just below the baby's left ear.

Dr. Vance stopped dead in his tracks. His hands hovered in the air, trembling violently. The color drained from his face, leaving him completely ghost-white.

"Doctor? What are you doing? He’s in respiratory arrest!"

Martha screamed, pushing past him to administer oxygen. But Dr. Vance stood there, completely frozen in shock, staring at the newborn as if he had just seen a ghost from his darkest past.
