A Young Soldier Mocked a Weathered Veteran, Until a Single Shot Revealed His Legendary Past
The Clash at the Range
The midday sun beat down mercilessly on the dusty desert shooting range, baking the dry earth until waves of heat shimmered over the targets. Seventy-two-year-old George walked with a slow, deliberate stride toward the registration desk. He wore a faded tan field coat that had seen better days, matching the silver of his tight buzzcut. To the casual observer, he was just another old-timer trying to recapture his youth. But beneath that weathered exterior lay a lifetime of secrets.
Standing near the desk was Derek, a thirty-two-year-old active-duty soldier wearing a navy tactical vest. Derek was the picture of modern military arrogance, boasting to his peers about his latest qualification scores. When he saw George approach, a smug smile spread across his face. He stepped in front of the registration clipboard, blocking the older man's path.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?" Derek asked, his voice dripping with condescension.
George didn't flinch. He simply reached past Derek to grab the pen. As he pulled his sleeve back to sign the registry, his forearm was exposed. Etched into his tanned, scarred skin was a faded black tattoo of a snarling wolf. Derek caught sight of it and laughed dismissively, folding his arms. He had no idea what that symbol truly meant.
Without a word, George took his scoped rifle and walked out to the firing line. The wind was kicking up dust, making the target at one thousand yards nearly impossible to see. Derek and his buddies followed, whispering and laughing, waiting for the old man to fail. George took a deep breath, aligning the scope. He squeezed the trigger. A single, deafening crack echoed across the canyon.
"I only need one shot," George said calmly, lowering the rifle.
Derek peered through his spotting scope, and his face instantly drained of color. The bullet had struck the absolute dead center of the distant steel target. "What? Impossible!" he stammered, a tear of sheer shock rolling down his cheek. Behind them, the old range master whispered in awe, "That is the mark of the ghost unit."
