The Ghost of the Range

The desert sun beat down mercilessly on the cracked earth of the Mojave range, radiating a brutal heat that made the horizon shimmer. Under the blinding glare, thirty-one-year-old Sergeant Ryan stood among his peers, his dark camo tactical gear immaculate and his posture brimming with youthful arrogance. He was the golden boy of the division, a sharpshooter who had never known defeat. To Ryan, the annual open tactical competition was nothing more than a victory lap, a chance to show off his flawless reflexes to the younger recruits who hung on his every word.

Then, Walter arrived. Walking with a slow, measured gait that carried the weight of a different era, the seventy-three-year-old veteran approached the registration counter. He wore a faded, dark canvas jacket, a stark contrast to the high-tech gear surrounding him. His short white hair caught the harsh sunlight, and his face was a roadmap of weathered lines, carved by decades of unspoken history. He carried a simple, battered rifle case that looked as old as he was.

Ryan smirked, nudging the soldier next to him. He stepped forward, blocking Walter’s path with a dismissive chuckle.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?"

A few chuckles rippled through the crowd. Walter didn't flinch. Slowly, he adjusted his heavy gear, pulling back his sleeve. Beneath the canvas lay a stark, pitch-black wolf tattoo on his forearm. Ryan glanced at it and laughed dismissively, folding his arms. But Walter remained silent, lifting his scoped rifle and aiming down the range toward a target nearly impossible to see in the shimmering heat.

"I only need one shot,"

Walter murmured. A single crack shattered the desert silence. A split second later, the distinct metallic ring of a perfect bullseye echoed back. Ryan’s jaw dropped. A single tear of shock rolled down his cheek as a deep, authoritative voice boomed behind them: "That is the mark of the ghost unit."
