The Unexpected Visitor

The rain beat heavily against the towering glass windows of Sterling & Co., one of the most exclusive watch boutiques on Fifth Avenue. Inside, the atmosphere was warm and silent, lit by the soft glow of magnificent crystal chandeliers. Liam, a young clerk dressed in a sharp navy blue vest, was meticulously polishing a display case when the heavy glass doors glided open. An elderly woman in a worn wheelchair rolled into the showroom. She wore a simple, faded knitted shawl, looking entirely out of place amidst the multimillion-dollar watches.

Before Liam could greet her, Sarah, the store's ruthless manager, stepped forward. Clad in a tailored black suit, Sarah’s eyes swept over the woman with immediate disdain.

"Can I help you? We don’t receive solicitors here," Sarah said, her voice dripping with condescension.

The elderly woman, whose name was Clara, offered a gentle smile. "I’m not here to beg, dear. I was hoping someone could look at my husband’s watch. It stopped ticking yesterday." She carefully placed a heavily scratched, vintage watch with a peeling leather strap onto the pristine glass counter.

Sarah gasped in horror. "We don't repair trash here. This is a luxury establishment. Please take that garbage to a pawn shop."

Disgusted by her manager's cruelty, Liam stepped in. He picked up the watch and grabbed a polishing cloth. "I can look at it for you, ma'am," he said kindly. Sarah leaned in, whispering fiercely, "You’re going to lose your job over this, Liam."

Ignoring the threat, Liam fastened the watch back onto Clara's wrist. "To her, it matters," he replied quietly. Clara’s eyes welled with tears. She reached into a faded envelope and pulled out an old black-and-white photograph of a young man wearing the exact same watch. Liam looked from the photo to the grand portrait of Arthur Sterling, the store's legendary founder, hanging on the wall. The resemblance was unmistakable.

"Is he the founder?" Liam whispered.

Clara smiled softly. "And I am his wife," she replied, leaving them completely stunned.
