An Unexpected Guest

The rain beat heavily against the grand glass facade of Sterling & Co., a premier watch boutique nestled in the heart of the city's luxury district. Inside, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the dreary weather outside. Sparkling crystal chandeliers cast a warm, ambient glow over polished mahogany walls and pristine glass display cases housing timepieces worth small fortunes. Liam, a kind-hearted young assistant dressed in a tailored navy vest, was meticulously polishing a display when the heavy brass doors slowly opened.

An elderly Caucasian woman in a worn wheelchair rolled herself into the showroom. Her name was Clara. She wore a simple, faded cardigan that stood out sharply against the boutique's opulence. Clara navigated her chair toward the main counter, her hands trembling slightly as she reached into her pocket. With great care, she laid a worn, scratched vintage watch onto the clean glass display. The strap was frayed, and the glass face was clouded with age.

Before Liam could greet her, the sharp clicking of high heels echoed across the marble floor. It was Sarah, the boutique’s demanding manager, dressed in a sharp black business suit. Sarah sneered openly at the sight of the battered timepiece.

"We don't repair trash,"
she said coldly, her voice dripping with disdain.

Liam felt a surge of empathy. Ignoring his manager’s icy glare, he picked up the watch and began to gently buff the glass with his cleaning cloth. He walked around the counter, knelt beside Clara, and carefully fastened the watch back onto her frail wrist.

"To her, it matters,"
Liam replied softly. Sarah leaned in close, her eyes narrowing as she whispered,
"You're going to lose your job over this, Liam."

Unfazed, Clara reached into her bag and held up an old, yellowed envelope containing a vintage black-and-white photograph.

"My husband wore it here,"
she said softly. Liam looked from the photo to a large, gold-framed portrait of the store's founder hanging on the wood-paneled wall. The resemblance was unmistakable.
"Is he the founder?"
Liam asked in awe. Clara looked up, her eyes shining.
"And I am his wife,"
she replied, leaving them both utterly speechless.
