The concrete courtyard of Blackwood Penitentiary was a pressure cooker waiting to explode. High concrete walls, topped with coils of razor-sharp barbed wire, shut out the rest of the world, while guards in the watchtowers kept their rifles trained on the sea of orange below. In the center of the yard, a crowd of inmates had gathered, their murmurs rising like a swarm of angry hornets. They were circling two figures: Roman, the undisputed king of the yard, and Skye, the newest transfer.

Roman was a colossal figure, his skin a roadmap of dark, menacing tattoos that told stories of a lifetime of violence. Standing well over six feet five inches, he towered over Skye, who looked incredibly fragile by comparison. She stood with a messy blonde ponytail, wearing a simple dark grey tank top and standard-issue orange prison pants. To anyone else, she looked like prey. But Skye’s posture held no fear.

Roman leaned down, his face inches from hers. A mocking grin spread across his scarred features. He looked at her with pure condescension, enjoying the audience.

The Standoff in the Yard

"Well, show us what you're capable of," Roman sneered, his voice booming across the yard.

The crowd erupted into cheers and jeers, urging him to crush her. Roman threw his head back, flexing his massive shoulders, and let out a terrifying, animalistic roar that would have sent any other inmate running for the guards. But Skye didn’t flinch. She didn’t even blink. She stood completely unfazed, her blue eyes icy and calm as she stared directly into the eyes of the giant. The sheer defiance in her gaze sent a sudden chill through the courtyard.
