A Young Soldier Mocked This Old Veteran, Until One Shot Revealed A Hidden Legend
The Ghost of the Desert
The Arizona sun beat down mercilessly on the dusty tactical range, cooking the air until it shimmered in waves of blinding heat. At sixty-nine years old, Edward didn't mind the heat; it was far more forgiving than the frozen peaks he had survived decades ago. Wearing a faded brown field jacket and carrying a vintage wooden rifle case, he walked with slow, deliberate steps toward the registration counter. Around him, young active-duty soldiers in high-tech carbon-fiber gear looked at him with amusement, whispering to one another.
Suddenly, a tall, muscular soldier in dark tactical gear stepped directly into Edward's path. His name was Hunter, a thirty-three-year-old marksman with a reputation as fierce as his arrogance. He crossed his arms, a smug smile spreading across his face as he looked down at the older man.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?" Hunter asked, his voice dripping with condescension.
The younger soldiers chuckled, expecting the old man to apologize and walk away. Edward didn't flinch. He slowly adjusted the strap of his rifle case, pulling back his sleeve just enough to reveal a faded black wolf tattoo on his weathered forearm. Hunter glanced at it, scoffing dismissively. He didn't recognize the insignia, treating it like a meaningless relic of a long-forgotten era.
When Edward's name was called, he stepped up to the firing line. The target was a staggering eight hundred yards away, swaying violently in the unpredictable desert wind. Most of the younger competitors had used multiple shots just to nick the outer edge. Edward raised his vintage scoped rifle, aligning his breath with the howling wind.
"I only need one shot," Edward murmured calmly.
A single, deafening crack echoed across the canyon. The target indicator instantly flashed bright red, confirming a perfect, absolute dead-center bullseye. Hunter’s jaw dropped. He stumbled back, his face turning pale as he stammered, "What? Impossible!"
