The air in the canyon was thick with the acrid stench of burning metal and cordite. A black plume of smoke billowed from the wreckage of the lead armored vehicle, casting a grim shadow over the rocky terrain. Pinned down and outgunned, Sergeant Chris Miller had prepared himself for the worst. But then, an act of sheer, suicidal bravery saved them. A lone soldier from the support unit had charged into the line of fire, drawing the enemy's attention and allowing Chris’s squad to survive. Now, that heroic soldier was paying the price, lying broken and bleeding on a dusty stretcher.

A Shocking Discovery

Chris knelt in the dirt, his hands trembling as he held the soldier's shoulder. Beside him, Mark, the squad's combat medic, was working with frantic, desperate movements. The medic's red-cross helmet was covered in dust, his face pale with panic as he tried to stem the flow of blood from a deep shrapnel wound.

"Stay with me, don't you dare fade now!" Chris desperately pleaded, his voice cracking under the weight of the chaos.

Mark didn't look up, his fingers pressing hard against the wound.

"Massive blood loss! She won't last, hold her steady!" the medic yelled, his voice strained over the crackle of the nearby flames.

Chris looked down at her, his chest heaving. Sweat and blood matted her strawberry blonde hair, but there was something agonizingly familiar about her face.

"She, she saved all of us..." Chris stammered, tears blurring his vision.

Then, as Mark cut away her torn tactical gear, a silver chain slipped out from beneath her collar. Attached to it was a small, tarnished silver locket. Chris's breath caught in his throat. He reached out, his fingers brushing away the grime from her neck, revealing a tiny, star-shaped birthmark just below her left ear. His heart hammered violently against his ribs.

"Wait, this can't be... it's her!" Chris whispered, his eyes widening in sudden, shocked recognition.
