The sun-drenched garden of the Whispering Pines Estate was supposed to be the backdrop for Clara’s happiest day. Dressed in a breathtaking white lace gown, Clara held hands with David, her groom, beneath a lush arch of climbing white roses. The air was filled with the sweet scent of jasmine and the soft murmur of eighty loved ones. Everything was picture-perfect. But just as the minister began the vows, the heavy iron gates at the back of the garden creaked open with a harsh, metallic groan.

A hush fell over the assembly. Walking slowly but purposefully down the stone aisle was a woman who did not belong. She wore a shimmering ruby-red evening gown that stood out like a drop of blood against the pastel decor. Her blonde hair fell in elegant waves, and her expression was carved of pure marble. But it wasn't her striking dress that drew every eye—it was the two little girls walking on either side of her, holding her hands. They wore matching pastel pink lace dresses, their little curls bouncing, their eyes wide with confusion.

David’s hand went cold in Clara’s grasp. He froze, his face draining of all color as he stared at the approaching trio. The blonde woman stopped right at the altar, stepping directly between the bride and groom.

Clara gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. She looked from the woman to the little girls, and then to David. The resemblance was undeniable. The girls possessed the exact same striking, forest-green eyes and cleft chin as the man she was about to marry.

The Shocking Interruption

David looked completely bewildered, his breath coming in shallow gasps. He gestured weakly to the little girls and whispered:

"Elise. Who are they?"

Elise looked him directly in the eyes, her voice steady and ringing through the silent garden:

"Your daughters."

Clara felt the ground tilt beneath her feet. The beautiful dream of her wedding day shattered instantly into a thousand jagged pieces.
