The Oakridge Elementary gymnasium was transformed into a magical wonderland, lit by warm string lights and hanging paper stars. Happy music echoed off the polished wooden floors, filled with the joy and laughter of fathers and daughters dancing together. It was the night nine-year-old Abigail had been dreaming of for months. She stood in the center of the basketball court, looking absolutely angelic in her champagne-colored lace dress, her strawberry blonde ringlets bouncing as she turned. But as the spotlight shifted to the center of the court, a devastating reality set in.

Abigail was completely alone.

From the sidelines, Sarah watched her daughter’s face fall. The excitement that had carried them through hours of curling hair and choosing the perfect hair bow vanished instantly. Abigail’s lower lip began to tremble. A single tear escaped, cutting a path through her light makeup, followed by a quiet sob.

"Dad, why didn't you come?"

Her trembling voice was barely a whisper, yet it pierced through the loud music and laughter, striking Sarah like a physical blow. The couples danced around Abigail, leaving her isolated in her heartbreak. The young girl wiped another tear from her cheek, her eyes searching the empty doorway of the gym.

"Please, come with me,"

She whispered to the empty space where her father should have been standing. Sarah couldn't stand to watch her daughter crumble any longer. Swallowing the lump of rage and grief in her throat, she rushed onto the court, throwing her coat over Abigail’s shivering shoulders. She held her daughter tight, murmuring soft words of comfort before handing her over to her trusted friend, Melissa, who promised to take care of her.

Sarah’s grief quickly hardened into cold determination. David had promised. He had even bought a matching champagne-colored tie. But lately, he had been distant, secretive, and always on his phone. Pulling out her phone, Sarah checked their location-sharing app. The red dot didn't point to his office or the highway. It was pulsing at the city hospital.
