The Golden Trap

The formal dining room of the Sterling estate was a masterpiece of old-world luxury. A massive, gold-carved mirror reflected the glittering light of a crystal chandelier, casting a warm glow over the mahogany table. But the warmth of the room did not reach Victoria. She stood rigid, her blonde hair swept back into a low, elegant bun, her charcoal grey dress feeling like a suit of armor against her own flesh. She could hear her own heartbeat, loud and erratic, matching the rising panic in her chest.

On either side of her stood the architects of her golden cage. Her mother, Eleanor, wore a deep blue gown, her coiffed brown hair perfectly in place, her hand resting heavily on Victoria's shoulder. Beside her, her father, Arthur, stood tall in his dark charcoal suit, his graying temples giving him an air of undisputed authority. His hand gripped Victoria’s arm with a firm, unyielding pressure that signaled there was no escape.

"You planned this behind my back," Victoria whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of betrayal and disbelief.

Eleanor’s lips curved into a cold, practiced smile. She patted Victoria’s shoulder, a gesture that was entirely performative, meant only for the illusion of maternal warmth.

"It's for the family, Victoria," Eleanor said, her voice smooth and devoid of any real affection.

Arthur’s grip tightened just enough to let Victoria know his patience was wearing thin.

"You have no choice," he added firmly, his eyes locking onto hers with cold determination.

Unable to bear their touch a moment longer, Victoria pulled away. She turned on her heel and walked out of the dining room, her heels clicking sharply against the marble floor. Behind her, she heard the soft, mocking laughter of her parents. Eleanor leaned in, whispering to Arthur, "She'll fall in line." Arthur smiled, grasping his wife’s hand. "She always does," he replied.

Locked in her bedroom, Victoria tried to make sense of the nightmare. They were forcing her to marry Julian Vance, a notorious tech billionaire. To the world, it was a match made in heaven. To Victoria, it felt like a death sentence.
