Thomas sat in the corner booth of Sunny’s Express, a brightly lit fast-food joint on the edge of town. He wore his favorite red trucker hat, pulled low to block out the harsh glare of the overhead fluorescent lights. It had been an exhausting twelve-hour shift at the construction site, and his stomach was growling. All he wanted was a quick, quiet meal before heading home to an empty house. His wife, Sarah, was supposed to be three states away, tending to her ailing mother. He missed her terribly, but he took comfort in knowing he was working hard to support her.

He unwrapped the greasy paper from his double cheeseburger and took a large, hungry bite. But as his teeth sank into the meat, he felt a sharp, agonizing crunch. It was his wife’s wedding ring—the very ring she claimed to have lost at her fitness club three months ago.
