The Cruelest Joke

The clinical, sunlit hospital room smelled heavily of antiseptic, a scent that Clara had come to associate with her deepest fears. Sitting in the stiff hospital bed, she adjusted the pale green gown that felt far too large for her shrinking frame. The IV stand beside her hummed quietly, dripping the medication that was supposed to save her life but often made her feel like she was fading away. Every day was a battle, but she had always believed she wasn't fighting it alone.

Then, the door opened. Her husband, David, stepped inside wearing a charcoal grey button-down shirt. He didn't offer his usual warm greeting. Instead, he stood over her with a serious, unreadable expression, holding a thick manila folder. Written across the front in bold, unforgiving black marker was a single word: DIVORCE.

Clara’s breath hitched in her throat. A cold dread washed over her as she stared at the folder. She looked up at David, her eyes wide with terror, her mind racing through a nightmare where she was abandoned in her darkest hour. But just as the first tear began to roll down her cheek, David’s stern face broke into a wide, playful grin.

He chuckled softly and playfully tapped the folder against her bald head.

"Gotcha!" he laughed, wrapping his arms and the paper around her neck.
Clara let out a breathless laugh, a mixture of intense relief and lingering shock. She doubled over giggling, believing it was just a dark, lighthearted prank to break the heavy tension of her illness. David laughed warmly, kissing her forehead before setting the folder on the bedside table and heading out to grab dinner. But as the door clicked shut, the silence returned, and Clara's eyes drifted back to the folder. A strange intuition urged her to open it.
