The Trap on the Windward Star

The Atlantic Ocean was a brilliant, deceptive blue under the midday sun. On the deck of the luxury yacht, Windward Star, seventy-two-year-old Martha clung desperately to the cold stainless-steel railing. Her silver hair, usually perfectly pinned, whipped wildly around her face. Her chest heaved with panic as she stared down at the churning ocean water below. Behind her, her daughter Sarah gripped her shoulders with a terrifying, desperate strength. Sarah’s blue floral dress fluttered in the sea breeze, a stark contrast to the cold fury in her eyes.

A few feet away, Arthur stood with his arms folded across his white linen shirt. His expression was a mask of icy indifference. He made no move to help, nor did he speak. He simply watched the struggle play out like a spectator at a morbid theater production.

"You won't get away with this, Sarah!" Martha gasped, her voice cracking under the strain of the physical struggle.

Sarah leaned in closer, her fingers digging deeper into Martha's dark blue dress. Her voice was a chilling whisper that barely carried over the sound of the yacht’s idling engine.

"No one is looking, Mother," Sarah murmured. "No one is coming to save you."

Martha’s heart hammered violently against her ribs. For months, Sarah and Arthur had pressured her to sign over the family’s multi-million-dollar shipping empire. They claimed she was too fragile to run it, but Martha knew the truth: they were drowning in debt. When Martha had agreed to this private family cruise, she thought it was an olive branch. Now, looking into her daughter's empty eyes, she realized it was a death trap. If she fell overboard, it would be ruled a tragic accident. As Sarah began to pry Martha's fingers from the railing, Martha stared at her own daughter in absolute dread, realizing that the child she had raised was willing to let her drown for a fortune.
