The Clipboard and the Rifle

The desert heat radiated off the gravel, creating a shimmering haze that made the distant targets look like dancing ghosts. Captain Amanda Vance stood at the edge of the firing line, her fingers tightly gripping the edges of a plastic clipboard. For six months, this clipboard had been her primary weapon. Once recognized as one of the elite snipers in the division, she had been systematically sidelined by General Charles Sterling, a traditionalist who openly disdained the idea of female combat specialists.

Behind her, General Charles was entertaining a group of visiting defense officials. After his hand-picked shooters failed to register a single clean hit in the treacherous, shifting desert winds, the atmosphere had grown incredibly tense. Seeking a scapegoat to lighten the mood and deflect from his squad's poor performance, Charles turned his stern, shaved head toward Amanda. A mocking sneer spread across his weathered face.

"What are you going to do, Captain, throw a clipboard at it?"

The visiting officials turned to look, some wearing uncomfortable smiles. Amanda felt the familiar burn of humiliation, but she didn't let it show. Instead, she took a steady step forward, her eyes locking onto his. She set the clipboard down on a nearby ammunition crate.

"Request permission to take a lane, General," Amanda said, her voice cutting through the whistling desert wind.

The request caught Charles off guard. Under the watchful eyes of the foreign dignitaries, he couldn't simply refuse her without appearing cowardly. He gestured toward a custom bolt-action rifle resting on the rack, his voice dropping to a harsh, quiet warning.

"One round, Captain. Don't embarrass me."

Amanda knelt in the gravel, the sharp stones biting into her knees. She pulled the heavy rifle close, aligning her eye with the high-powered scope. The world narrowed down to her breath, the crosshairs, and the impossible target over a thousand yards away.
