The autumn fog hung heavy over the winding stretch of Route 9, a desolate road that cut through the heart of the Oregon valley. Eighteen-year-old Cody was driving home from his late shift at the auto repair shop, the steady hum of his old sedan the only sound in the quiet night. He was tired, his hands stained with grease, looking forward to nothing more than a warm meal and a long sleep. But as his headlights swept across a sharp bend, they caught the glint of chrome twisted in the ditch.

Cody slammed on his brakes, his tires screeching on the damp asphalt. Through the thick mist, he saw a heavy motorcycle lying on its side, its front wheel still spinning lazily in the cold air. A few yards away, a figure lay motionless in the wet grass. Adrenaline surged through Cody’s veins. He grabbed a clean white shop rag from his glove compartment, threw open his car door, and scrambled down the muddy embankment.

As he drew closer, he saw a rugged man, around forty-four, wearing a heavy leather biker vest adorned with skull patches. The man was groaning, clutching his shoulder where a jagged piece of metal had torn through his clothing. Cody knelt in the damp grass, his navy blue hoodie soaking up the moisture.

"Hey. Are you hurt bad?" Cody asked, his voice trembling but urgent.

The man opened his eyes, grimacing in pain. But when his gaze locked onto Cody’s face, his expression shifted from agony to utter disbelief. He stared at the young man as if he were looking at a ghost. Cody, focused on the immediate danger, pressed the white cloth firmly against the man's bleeding shoulder to stem the flow.

Despite the pain, the man didn’t pull away. Instead, he reached up with a trembling hand, his eyes softening with an inexplicable warmth.

"You didn't have to do this," the man whispered, his voice raspy and thick with emotion. "You're stronger than you think."

Cody froze, the stranger's words echoing in the quiet night. Before he could ask what the man meant, his eyes fell on a silver ring on the man's finger—an exact match to the one his mother kept locked in her drawer.
