The heat rising from the Nevada desert was suffocating, but Rachel stood as still as a statue under the rustic wooden pavilion. Dust devils danced across the dry expanse, whistling through the gaps in the timber roof. She wore a simple charcoal hoodie, her dark ponytail pulled back tightly, a stark contrast to the sea of tactical gear and high-tech weaponry surrounding her. This was the annual firing line trials, the playground of the country's most elite marksmen. And Rachel was not invited.

The Firing Line Challenge

Ben, the head instructor, stood beside a heavy wooden table, his khaki tactical gear immaculate. He adjusted his sunglasses and looked down his nose at her. To him, she was just an amateur who had somehow bypassed security. He wanted her gone before the VIP guests arrived.

"Seven shots. Show us you belong on this firing line," Ben said, his voice dripping with skepticism.

Rachel didn't say a word. She reached down and unlatched the heavy, scuffed wooden case on the table. Inside lay a bolt-action rifle, its dark steel worn but meticulously oiled. It was a weapon built for precision, a relic of a legacy that had been dragged through the dirt.

"Careful, that rifle kicks harder than it looks," Ben warned, a smirk playing on his lips. "Right in the center, if you can find it."

Rachel lifted the rifle. The weight was familiar, comforting. She chambered a round, the metallic slide echoing in the quiet pavilion. She brought the stock to her shoulder, took a slow breath, and aligned her sights with the spinning metal targets downrange, hundreds of yards away. She squeezed the trigger.

The loud crack of the rifle shattered the desert silence. The recoil slammed into her shoulder, but her stance remained unbroken. Downrange, a spinning metal target disintegrated. Ben froze, his smirk instantly vanishing. He raised his spotting scope, his hands suddenly trembling.

"Did she hit both?" he whispered to himself, stunned.

Rachel calmly cycled the bolt, a warm brass casing clinking onto the table.

"You gave me seven shots," Rachel replied.

She raised the rifle again, her eyes cold and focused, ready to show them exactly who she was.
