The Shadow on the Range

The desert sun beat down mercilessly on the cracked earth of the Arizona shooting range. Heat waves shimmered over the targets, distorting the horizon into a blurry haze. Walter, a seventy-three-year-old veteran with a face carved from granite and a shock of short white hair, walked slowly toward the registration counter. He wore a faded, dark canvas jacket despite the heat, his boots kicking up small puffs of dust with every step.

Behind the counter stood Ryan, a thirty-one-year-old active-duty soldier wearing a pristine, dark camo tactical suit. Ryan was young, confident, and possessed the dangerous arrogance of someone who had never truly been tested in the crucible of war. He looked at the old man’s worn clothes and weathered face, a mocking smile spreading across his lips.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?" Ryan sneered, his voice loud enough for the other soldiers nearby to hear.

Walter didn't flinch. Instead, he calmly rolled up his sleeve to retrieve his identification from his pocket. As the dark canvas slid up, a faded black tattoo of a snarling wolf was revealed on his forearm. Ryan glanced at it and laughed dismissively, folding his arms across his chest. He had no idea what that symbol represented, but the older range master standing in the corner suddenly went pale, his eyes wide with recognition.

Without a word, Walter picked up a standard scoped rifle from the rack. He walked to the firing line, where a target sat five hundred yards away under the harsh, blinding light. Ryan followed him, still snickering. "Let's see what you've got, grandpa. Don't throw your back out."

Walter took a deep breath, his entire body settling into a stillness that defied his age. He aimed, the wind howling around him, and pulled the trigger once. The deafening roar echoed across the canyon. Walter lowered the rifle and looked Ryan dead in the eye.

"I only need one shot," Walter said calmly.

Ryan smirked and looked through his spotting scope, expecting a complete miss. But as the lens focused, his jaw dropped. The bullet had pierced the exact center of the bullseye. "What? Impossible!" Ryan stammered, a cold sweat breaking out on his neck as a single tear of shock rolled down his cheek.
