The desert sun was merciless, baking the cracked earth of the Arizona shooting range under a blinding white glare. Dust hung heavy in the dry air, kicked up by the heavy boots of active-duty soldiers who had gathered for the annual marksmanship competition. Among them was Leo, a twenty-nine-year-old corporal whose arrogance was as sharp as his black tactical shirt. He stood by the registration counter, basking in the admiration of his peers after scoring a near-perfect round.

Then came Thomas. At sixty-seven, Thomas looked like a relic of a forgotten era. He wore a faded, dust-streaked dark brown canvas jacket, his cropped grey hair catching the harsh light. He walked with a slight, deliberate limp, his weathered face showing no emotion as he approached the counter to sign in.

Leo smirked, blocking Thomas’s path. He looked the old veteran up and down with a condescending sneer.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?"

A few young soldiers laughed, but Thomas remained silent. He reached for the registration pen, and as his sleeve pulled back, a black wolf tattoo was exposed on his forearm. Leo glanced at it, laughing dismissively with folded arms. He didn't recognize the symbol, dismissing it as some cheap, old-school ink. But Thomas didn't care for his laughter. He calmly picked up a nearby scoped rifle, loaded a single round, and aimed at a target nearly a thousand yards away, shimmering in the heat waves.

Without hesitation, Thomas pulled the trigger. The thunderous crack echoed through the canyon, followed by the distant, sharp clang of metal. The monitor flashed a perfect bullseye.

"I only need one shot,"

Thomas said quietly, his voice steady. Leo stared at the screen, his jaw dropping in absolute disbelief. He began stammering, unable to process what he had just witnessed.

"What? Impossible!"

A tear of sheer humiliation and shock rolled down Leo's cheek beneath his dark military cap. Just then, an older commander walked up, staring at the old veteran's arm in profound reverence.

"That is the mark of the ghost unit,"

the commander whispered, his voice laced with awe.
