A Night of Cruel Intentions

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of shimmering silk, expensive champagne, and whispered secrets. Elena walked beside her husband, Richard, feeling like a ghost in a room full of living dolls. She wore a simple, high-collared white silk shirt, a stark contrast to the plunging necklines of the high-society women around her. She had always kept her past guarded, hiding the physical and emotional remnants of her former life. But tonight, that privacy was about to be shattered in the most brutal way possible.

Evelyn, a wealthy socialite in a shimmering gold gown, had been watching Elena all evening with predatory eyes. Stepping into Elena's path, she sneered loudly enough to draw the attention of nearby guests.

"Tell us, Elena, why do you always dress like a Victorian schoolteacher? What are you hiding under there?" Evelyn mocked, her voice dripping with venom.

Before Elena could step back, Evelyn lunged forward. With a swift, violent tug, she ripped open the back of Elena's white silk shirt. The fabric tore with a sharp screech, exposing Elena's bare back to the entire ballroom. A collective gasp echoed through the room. Stretched across her skin were thick, jagged, stitched cross scars—the unmistakable marks of a horrific trauma.

"Look at her!" Evelyn pointed mockingly, laughing. "She’s nothing but scars! A monster trying to play princess in our world!"

Elena froze, tears of humiliation streaming down her face. She looked desperately at Richard, expecting her husband to defend her. Instead, Richard’s face twisted in disgust and social embarrassment.

"Security, get her out of here!" Richard barked coldly, turning his back on his own wife.

But before the guards could move, the grand double doors of the ballroom swung open. A hush fell over the crowd as General Vance, a highly decorated military officer, marched inside, his chest covered in medals. He ignored the wealthy elites and walked straight to Elena. He stopped, stood at rigid attention, and raised his hand in a respectful salute.

"Captain Sterling, welcome home," General Vance said, his voice echoing like thunder.
