The rhythmic, synthetic hum of the neonatal intensive care unit was the only sound keeping Amanda sane. Her newborn son, Leo, lay inside the sterile plastic incubator, a web of tiny wires and tubes taped to his fragile, translucent skin. Born three months premature, his survival was a minute-by-minute gamble. Amanda sat on a metal stool, her eyes red and swollen from days of silent weeping. Outside the double-paned glass partition, her husband, Sean, paced back and forth, his face etched with absolute exhaustion.

Suddenly, the heavy door clicked open. Dylan, their ten-year-old son, stepped into the sterile room. He was wearing his favorite dark grey hoodie, his hood pulled slightly over his short brown crop. The door flew open. Ryan, a male nurse in teal scrubs, rushed inside with emergency equipment. He quickly checked Leo's vitals, his jaw dropping in sheer disbelief.

"He has a pulse! It’s strong and perfectly stable!" Ryan exclaimed.
