A Test of Fire

The desert sun beat down mercilessly on the dusty outdoor shooting range, casting long, stark shadows under the weathered wooden roof. Jessica adjusted the collar of her navy fleece jacket, her fingers tracing the familiar, worn fabric. She could feel the heavy weight of tension in the air. Standing across from her was Ryan, a seasoned tactical instructor clad in rugged black gear, his eyes hidden behind dark sunglasses. But it wasn't Ryan's presence that made her blood run cold. It was the man standing just behind him—Caleb, her ex-husband and the corrupt officer who had systematically ruined her career two years ago.

Ryan gestured to a long wooden table where a heavy bolt-action rifle lay resting in its hard case.

"Seven shots. Show us you belong on this firing line,"
Ryan said, his voice carrying the hardened skepticism of a man who had seen too many amateurs fail. Caleb stood by, a smug, mocking grin plastered across his face, clearly expecting her to fold under the pressure.

Jessica didn't utter a word. She stepped forward, her movements deliberate and precise. As she lifted the heavy rifle from its case, Ryan offered a curt warning.

"Careful, that rifle kicks harder than it looks. Right in the center, if you can find it."

Ignoring Caleb's quiet chuckle, Jessica raised the rifle to her shoulder. She closed her eyes for a brief second, breathing in the scent of gunpowder and hot dust, letting her muscle memory take over. When she opened her eyes, the world narrowed down to the crosshairs and the distant spinning metal target. She squeezed the trigger. The thunderous roar of the rifle echoed through the canyon, and the heavy recoil slammed against her shoulder. Downrange, the metal target spun violently, ringing with a sharp, satisfying clang. Ryan gasped, looking completely stunned.

"Did she hit both?"
he asked, disbelieving. Jessica calmly cycled the bolt, the brass casing clattering to the floor.
"You gave me seven shots,"
she replied coldly, before immediately aiming downrange again.
