The Challenge in the Dust

The desert sun beat down mercilessly on the Red Creek Range, baking the dry Nevada earth until the air shimmered with heat waves. Under the rustic wooden overhang, Nicole stood perfectly still, her auburn hair catching the harsh light. She wore a simple navy blue windbreaker, a stark contrast to the rugged, dust-caked environment around her. On the rustic wooden table before her lay a worn leather gun case, holding her late father’s prized possession.

Standing beside her was Dan, the range’s head instructor. Clad in brown camo gear, a faded cap, and dark sunglasses, Dan looked like a man who had seen a thousand shooters fail. He didn't believe in sentimentality, and he certainly didn't believe Nicole had what it took to inherit this legendary facility. Behind them, a small crowd of local spectators gathered, murmuring skeptically. Among them was Nicole's uncle, Silas, wearing a smug, victorious grin.

"Seven shots. Show us you belong on this firing line," Dan said, his voice gravelly and devoid of warmth.

Nicole didn't utter a word. She unlatched the case, her fingers tracing the polished wood of the heavy bolt-action rifle. As she lifted the weapon, Dan stepped back, his arms crossed over his chest. He warned her with a grim shake of his head.

"Careful, that rifle kicks harder than it looks. Right in the center, if you can find it."

Nicole ignored the bait. She raised the rifle, pressing the stock firmly against her shoulder. She breathed out, matching her heartbeat to the rhythm of the desert wind. Through the iron sights, she aligned the target—a spinning metal disk hundreds of yards away. She squeezed the trigger. The deafening roar of the rifle echoed off the canyon walls, and the heavy recoil shoved her back. But she stood her ground. Downrange, a sharp, metallic clang rang out as the target spun violently.

Dan blinked, stunned. He raised his binoculars, murmuring to himself, "Did she hit both?" Nicole calmly cycled the bolt, the hot brass casing clinking against the wooden table.

"You gave me seven shots," Nicole replied calmly, before aiming and firing again.
