A Desperate Mother's Tears

The autumn wind bit through Grace’s thin, worn-out hoodie as she huddled over a metal table outside a bustling fast-food restaurant. At seven months pregnant, every movement was a struggle, but the gnawing hunger in her stomach was far worse than the cold. She hadn't eaten a proper meal in two days. Desperate and exhausted, she had spotted a half-eaten burger left behind on a tray. Casting her pride aside, she began to eat the scraps, tears of shame slipping down her cheeks.

Suddenly, a shadow fell over her. Lisa, a restaurant employee wearing a dark apron, reached down and pulled the tray away.

"Excuse me, I have to take the tray,"
Lisa said, her voice flat and indifferent to Grace’s plight. The sudden loss of her only food broke what little strength Grace had left. She buried her face in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably while clutching her swollen belly. She felt completely invisible, a ghost wandering the streets of a city that didn't care.

But inside the warm, brightly lit restaurant, someone was watching. James, a kind-hearted man in a navy blue shirt, had witnessed the entire heartbreaking scene through the window. Unable to stand by and do nothing, he walked up to the counter and handed his credit card to Lisa.

"Give her a full meal, charge it to my card,"
he said firmly.

A few minutes later, Lisa walked back outside. This time, her expression had softened. She placed a fresh, steaming bag of food and a warm drink in front of Grace.

"This is for you, from the gentleman inside,"
Lisa murmured. Grace looked up, her eyes red and puffy. Through the window, she saw James watching her with a gentle, reassuring smile. Clutching her chest in overwhelming gratitude, Grace realized that humanity hadn't entirely abandoned her.
