The Humiliation at the Gala

Grace Sterling was a quiet woman who worked as a museum archivist. She had spent the last three years trying to rebuild a quiet, normal life in the city. Her boyfriend, Julian, was the son of Edward Sinclair, one of the wealthiest real estate developers in the state. Tonight was the annual Sinclair Winter Gala, a glittering event held in a magnificent marble ballroom. Grace had dressed in a simple, elegant white silk blouse and a long dark skirt, hoping to blend into the background. But Penelope, a wealthy heiress who had long coveted Julian, had other plans.

Penelope cornered Grace in the center of the crowded ballroom, her eyes gleaming with malice. Before Grace could step aside, Penelope grabbed the collar of Grace's blouse and violently ripped it open. The fabric tore with a sharp screech, exposing Grace's bare back to the entire room. Across her pale skin lay thick, jagged, stitched cross scars. Penelope pointed mockingly, shouting:

"Look at her! She's nothing but scars!"

The high-society crowd gasped and whispered in disgust. Edward Sinclair stepped forward, his face twisted in disdain, and commanded, "Security, get her out of here!" Tears streamed down Grace's face as she clutched the ruined fabric of her shirt, feeling utterly defenseless.

But then, the heavy oak doors of the ballroom swung open. Admiral Vance, a highly decorated military commander, marched through the crowd. He bypassed the billionaires, walked straight to Grace, and saluted her with deep respect. "Captain Sterling, welcome home," he said loudly. The room fell into a stunned, terrifying silence as Edward's face turned pale.
