The 6 train was packed to the brim, humming with the weary energy of New York commuters heading home. Emily sat tucked into a corner seat, her body aching with a deep, bone-crushing exhaustion. She had just spent six hours in a cold hospital room undergoing another round of aggressive chemotherapy. Her skin was pale, her eyes heavy, and all she wanted was to close her eyes and pretend the world didn't exist for a few minutes. She pulled her black fleece hoodie low over her face, trying to block out the harsh, flickering fluorescent lights of the subway car.

At the next stop, a rush of new passengers crowded into the train. Among them was Beatrice, an elegant older woman clad in a pristine beige trench coat, her short white hair perfectly styled. She stood directly in front of Emily, holding onto the metal pole. Beatrice looked down at the young girl, her expression hardening into a scowl. To Beatrice, Emily was just another disrespectful youth refusing to show basic manners to her elders.

She tapped her designer umbrella on the floor to get Emily's attention. When Emily opened her tired eyes, Beatrice pointed an accusing finger directly at her.

"Don't you know you should yield your seat to an elderly person?" Beatrice demanded, her voice cutting through the rumble of the train.

Emily felt a wave of hot embarrassment wash over her. The passengers nearby turned to look, their eyes judging her silently.

"I'm tired," Emily whispered, her voice barely audible.

Beatrice scoffed loudly. "That is no excuse. You are rude, selfish, and have absolutely no manners."

Unable to bear the public shaming, Emily raised her trembling hands. Slowly, she pulled back her hood. The thick black fabric slid down, revealing her completely bald head, a stark and heartbreaking sign of her battle with cancer. The entire train car fell into a stunned, breathless silence. Beatrice froze, her finger still raised, her face losing all its color.
