The autumn wind was biting, but the cold inside Lily’s heart was far worse. Clutching her frayed flannel shirt around her shivering frame, she stared blankly at the neon sign of the fast-food restaurant. Only hours ago, her husband Mark had thrown her out of their home, packing her life into garbage bags after she revealed she was pregnant. He wanted a divorce, and he wanted his new, wealthy lifestyle. With no money and nowhere to go, hunger had finally driven Lily to the brink of despair.

She sat at a cold metal patio table outside the diner. On a nearby tray lay a discarded, half-eaten burger. Humiliation warred with survival instinct, but the sharp cramps in her stomach made the choice for her. With trembling, dirt-smudged hands, Lily picked up the cold burger and took a bite, tears spilling over her eyelashes.

"Excuse me, I have to take the tray,"

A sharp voice broke her focus. Amanda, a restaurant worker in a green apron, pulled the tray away, her face tight with professional duty. Lily froze, the half-chewed food turning to ash in her mouth. She broke down, sobbing uncontrollably as she clutched her pregnant stomach, completely defeated.

Through the glass window of the diner, David watched the scene unfold. Dressed in a simple grey zip-up hoodie, he felt a deep ache in his chest at the sight of the young woman’s pain. Without a second thought, David stood up and walked to the counter, pulling his credit card from his wallet. He handed it to Amanda as she walked back inside.

"Give her a full, fresh meal. Charge whatever she wants to my card,"

David said, his voice quiet but firm. Minutes later, Amanda walked back outside, carrying a warm, freshly wrapped meal. She placed it gently in front of Lily.

"This is for you, from the gentleman inside,"

Amanda said softly. Lily looked up through her tears, her eyes locking onto David through the glass. She clutched her chest, overwhelmed by an unexpected wave of gratitude.
