The Clash of Generations

The midday sun beat down mercilessly on the arid desert training ground, baking the cracked earth and turning the wooden check-in desk into a scorching surface. William, a sixty-eight-year-old veteran with cropped white hair and a weathered, stern face, walked with a quiet but firm step. He wore an old, faded olive green utility jacket—a relic of a lifetime of service that most of the young recruits here could barely comprehend.

Behind the desk sat Jax, a twenty-eight-year-old soldier dressed in pristine, dark-grey combat gear. Jax exuded a smug confidence, his posture relaxed and arrogant as he watched the old man approach. To Jax, this visitor was nothing more than an outdated nuisance interrupting his shift.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?" Jax sneered, his voice dripping with condescension.

William did not flinch. Instead, he slowly rolled up his right sleeve, revealing a dark, weathered wolf tattoo on his forearm. Jax chuckled derisively, crossing his arms and shaking his head. He had no idea what that symbol meant. But William’s silence was louder than any boast. Moving with fluid, practiced ease, the veteran bypassed the standard handguns, reached for a heavy, scoped sniper rifle on the rack, and raised it to his shoulder.

"I only need one shot," William said calmly.

He squeezed the trigger. The deafening crack of the rifle echoed across the canyon. A mile away, the impossible target shattered instantly. Jax’s smug grin vanished, replaced by sheer shock. A single tear of sudden terror and realization rolled down his cheek beneath his green cap. Behind them, the base commander stepped out, his voice solemn. "That is the mark of the ghost unit."
