The desert sun was merciless, baking the dusty Nevada shooting range in a harsh, blinding midday light. George walked with slow, deliberate steps toward the registration desk. At seventy-two, his silver buzzcut and rugged, weathered face bore the invisible scars of a lifetime spent in the shadows. He wore a faded tan field coat, a relic from an era most people only read about in history books.

Behind the desk stood Derek, a thirty-two-year-old active-duty soldier wearing a navy tactical vest and a smug, self-assured grin. To Derek, the old man looked like a lost tourist who had wandered onto a live-fire range.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?"

Derek asked, his voice dripping with condescension. George didn't flinch. He reached out to sign the registration ledger, pulling back his sleeve. On his weathered forearm, a black wolf tattoo was etched into his skin—a fierce, silent predator. Derek glanced at it and laughed dismissively, folding his arms.

"Nice dog,"

Derek sneered, completely ignorant of the history behind the ink. George remained silent. He took his vintage, bolt-action scoped rifle to the firing line. The younger competitors watched with amused grins, expecting the old-timer to miss the target entirely. Derek stood nearby, waiting for the inevitable failure.

George lay down in the sand, matching his breathing to the rhythm of the wind. He chambered a single round.

"I only need one shot,"

George said calmly. He squeezed the trigger. The rifle roared, kickback shaking the dust around him. A beat of silence hung in the air before the digital scoreboard flashed. It was a perfect bullseye at eight hundred yards.

Derek's jaw dropped. He grabbed his binoculars, his hands shaking.

"What? Impossible!"

he stammered. A single tear of shock and disbelief rolled down Derek's cheek as he stared at the impossible target. Behind them, the range commander stared in absolute awe.

"That is the mark of the ghost unit,"

the commander whispered, recognizing the black wolf.
