An Arrogant Soldier Mocked an Old Veteran, but One Shot Changed Everything
The Ghost of the Firing Range
The desert sun beat down mercilessly on the Fort Meade firing range, baking the dust into a fine, choking powder. Arthur walked slowly toward the check-in counter, his boots kicking up small clouds. At sixty-six, his hair was thinning and grey, and his faded beige canvas jacket looked out of place among the high-tech gear of the younger men. To the casual observer, he was just an old man lost in his memories.
But Arthur's eyes were sharp, scanning the horizon with a practiced ease. As he reached the counter, his quiet presence was interrupted by a loud, dismissive laugh. It was Leo, a thirty-four-year-old soldier clad in pristine black tactical gear. Leo stood with a smug grin, looking Arthur up and down with obvious contempt.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?"
Leo’s voice carried across the range, drawing snickers from the nearby recruits. Arthur didn't flinch. Instead, he slowly rolled up his right sleeve, revealing a weathered forearm. Etched into his skin was a stark, black wolf tattoo—a symbol long forgotten by the modern military. Leo laughed dismissively, folding his arms over his chest. "Nice dog, old-timer. Did you get that to scare the nurses at the home?"
Arthur ignored the insult. He reached out and picked up a heavy, scoped bolt-action rifle from the rack. He adjusted his stance, the rifle fitting into his shoulder like a missing puzzle piece. "You get five warm-up shots," Leo sneered, shaking his head.
Arthur peered through the scope, his breathing slowing to a perfect, rhythmic calm.
"I only need one shot," Arthur replied softly.
A split second later, the rifle roared. A mile downrange, the heavy steel target shattered into fragments. Leo grabbed his binoculars, his face instantly draining of color. He stammered, unable to process what he was seeing. Behind him, Colonel Vance walked up, staring at Arthur's forearm with wide, reverent eyes as a tear of realization rolled down Leo's cheek.
"That is the mark of the ghost unit," the Colonel whispered.
