The Old Man and the Range

The heat of the Nevada desert shimmered off the cracked earth, rising in waves that distorted the horizon. At seventy-one, Arthur felt the dry air deep in his bones, but his posture remained as straight as a pine. He wore a weathered canvas coat, stained with grease and years of hard travel, its fabric faded to a dull earth tone. Walking toward the registration counter of the dusty shooting range, his boots kicked up small puffs of dust. He carried a worn, unmarked leather rifle case that looked as ancient as he did.

Behind the counter stood Cole, a thirty-one-year-old active-duty soldier with a chest like a barrel and a dark combat vest that practically gleamed with modern tactical gear. Cole was surrounded by a small group of younger shooters, all of them laughing at some private joke. As Arthur approached, Cole’s eyes drifted over the old man's creased face, his silver hair, and his battered coat. A smug, mocking smile spread across the young soldier’s face.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?"

Cole’s voice carried across the range, prompting a wave of snickers from his companions. Arthur didn't flinch. He slowly reached into his pocket to retrieve his registration card. As he pulled his arm back, his sleeve rode up just enough to expose his forearm. Etched into his weathered skin was a faded black tattoo of a coiled wolf, its eyes sharp and predatory. Cole looked down, noticed the ink, and folded his arms, letting out a dismissive laugh.

Arthur ignored the mockery, took his position at the firing line, and unzipped his case. The target was set at an extreme distance, five hundred yards away, swaying gently in the crosswind. He lifted his heavy, scoped rifle, his movements fluid and precise. Cole stepped up behind him, still chuckling. "You only get five shots, old timer. Don't waste them." Arthur didn't look back. He adjusted his scope, took a slow, deep breath, and spoke in a calm, gravelly voice.

"I only need one shot."

A single crack shattered the desert silence. The bullet tore through the air, and a second later, the electronic target system beeped, confirming a flawless, dead-center bullseye. Cole’s jaw dropped. He stared at the screen, then at the faded wolf tattoo on Arthur's arm. The realization of what that symbol truly meant hit him like a physical blow. A single tear rolled down Cole’s cheek beneath his military cap. "That is the mark of the Ghost Unit," whispered an older range master who had walked up behind them, his voice filled with absolute awe.
