The chilly autumn wind swept through the bustling city streets, carrying with it the scent of roasted chestnuts and damp concrete. Emily walked briskly, her hand wrapped tightly around her seven-year-old son Owen's small hand. She was dressed in a striking crimson wool coat that stood out against the gray, towering skyscrapers of downtown. Owen, dressed in a sharp navy blazer and trousers for his private school interview, was chatting happily about his favorite cartoon. To anyone passing by, they were the picture of a perfect, affluent family.

But in a single second, that picture was shattered forever.

Owen suddenly stopped walking, his little fingers tightening around Emily's hand. He pointed toward a dark, recessed alcove of an abandoned department store.

"Mom, that boy looks like me," Owen whispered, his voice laced with confusion.

Emily smiled gently, turning her head to correct her son's overactive imagination. But as her eyes landed on the figure sitting on a flattened cardboard box, her smile froze. She slowly lowered her designer sunglasses, her breath hitching in her throat.

Sitting in the shadows was a boy of Owen's exact age. He wore a dirty, oversized gray hoodie, his cheeks smudged with soot and his hands red from the biting cold. But it wasn't his plight that made Emily’s heart stop; it was his face. He possessed the same messy brown hair, the same hazel eyes, and the exact same facial structure as Owen. It was like looking at a mirror image of her own son, stripped of his privilege and left to survive on the streets.

The boy looked up, his eyes locking onto Emily's. Slowly, with trembling fingers, he reached inside his dirty hoodie and pulled out a tarnished gold locket. He clicked it open, holding it out as if he had been waiting for this exact moment. Inside the locket were two tiny, identical baby photos, labeled "Owen" and "Connor."

"Mom, tell me what this means," Owen cried, tears beginning to stream down his face.

Emily collapsed to her knees on the cold concrete, her vision blurring with hot, heavy tears as she stared at the boy named Connor.
