A Cruel Betrayal in the Ballroom

The annual Astor Gala was the pinnacle of high society, a glittering sea of diamonds, silk, and champagne. But for Grace, it felt like a gilded cage. She stood near the edge of the ballroom, wearing a simple white silk blouse, hoping to remain unnoticed. She had only attended to support her fiancé, whose family reigned supreme in these elite circles. Unfortunately, Penelope, a wealthy heiress accustomed to getting whatever she wanted, had no intention of letting Grace find peace.

With a cruel smirk, Penelope glided through the crowd, her platinum gown shimmering under the massive crystal chandeliers. She stopped directly in front of Grace, her eyes dripping with malice.

"You don't belong here, Grace," Penelope sneered, her voice carrying across the immediate circle of guests. "You're nothing but a charity case trying to play dress-up. Let's see what you're hiding under that cheap fabric."

Before anyone could react, Penelope’s hand shot out. With a violent, deliberate yank, she ripped open the back of Grace's white blouse. The fabric tore with a sharp, sickening sound. A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom as the crowd stared in absolute shock. Exposed to the cold air were deep, jagged, stitched cross scars running across Grace's back. Penelope pointed and laughed mockingly.

"Look at her! She's nothing but scars! A complete freak!" she shouted.

The whispers turned into a deafening hum of judgment. Standing nearby, Edward, the wealthy patriarch of the Astor family and Grace’s soon-to-be father-in-law, stepped forward. Instead of defending her, his face twisted with embarrassment and anger.

"Security, get her out of here immediately!" Edward commanded, eager to erase the scene.

But before the guards could touch her, the grand double doors of the ballroom swung open. A hush fell over the room as Admiral Vance, a legendary and highly decorated military officer, marched inside. He ignored the wealthy elites and walked straight to Grace. Standing tall, he raised his hand in a crisp, respectful salute.

"Captain Sterling, welcome home," the Admiral said, his voice echoing with absolute authority.
