A Smug Soldier Mocked a Rugged Veteran, then One Shot Revealed His True Identity
The Old Man at the Range
The desert sun beat down mercilessly on the dusty shooting range, baking the clay targets and sending heat waves rippling across the horizon. Seventy-one-year-old Arthur adjusted his weathered canvas coat, his boots crunching softly on the gravel as he walked toward the registration counter. He was a man of few words, carrying a battered rifle case that had seen better days. He only wanted to register for the annual veteran's sharpshooting competition, a quiet ritual he performed every year to keep his mind sharp.
But peace was hard to come by. Standing near the counter was Cole, a thirty-one-year-old active-duty soldier wearing a sleek, dark combat vest. Cole was surrounded by his peers, boasting loudly about his recent scores. When he saw Arthur approaching, a smug, mocking smile spread across his face. He stepped directly into Arthur's path, blocking his way.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?"
Cole laughed dismissively, folding his arms across his chest. The younger soldiers snickered, expecting the old man to shrink away in embarrassment. Arthur remained entirely stoic. As he reached to adjust his rifle strap, his sleeve slid up, momentarily revealing a faded black wolf tattoo on his forearm. Cole glanced at it, scoffing at what he assumed was just a meaningless old drawing.
Arthur didn't argue. He simply unlatched his case, revealing a classic scoped rifle. The wind was howling, kicking up blinding dust storms across the thousand-yard range. Cole sneered, claiming the old man wouldn't even be able to see the target, let alone hit it. Arthur calmly looked at the arrogant young soldier, his eyes cold and steady.
"I only need one shot," Arthur said calmly.
He raised the rifle, took a single breath, and pulled the trigger. A thunderous crack echoed across the canyon. Moments later, the electronic target system chimed. It was a perfect, dead-center bullseye. Cole's jaw dropped, a tear of absolute disbelief rolling down his cheek. An older colonel nearby gasped, staring at Arthur's arm. "That is the mark of the ghost unit," the colonel whispered in awe.
