The grand foyer of the Sterling mansion was usually a place of quiet grandeur, but tonight, its towering marble columns and elegant curved wooden staircase felt like a gilded cage. Clara stood near the base of the stairs, her pale pink silk gown catching the warm, dramatic light of the crystal chandelier above. Her hands trembled as she pressed them against her pregnant belly, trying to shield her unborn child from the storm raging around her.

Julian, her husband, stood only inches away. His charcoal grey suit was immaculate, but his face was twisted in an ugly, unrecognizable mask of fury. He didn't see the tears streaming down Clara's face, nor did he care about the tiny, bleeding scratch on her cheek where his mother’s diamond ring had caught her moments before. Instead, he leaned in, his voice booming through the cavernous space.

"How dare you speak to my mother like that in my house?" Julian shouted, his eyes flashing with absolute malice.

Clara sobbed, the betrayal cutting deeper than any physical wound. She looked at the man she had loved, the man who had promised to protect her, and saw only a stranger.

"Your mother humiliated me," Clara wept, her voice cracking under the weight of her heartbreak. "She called my baby a mistake. She put her hands on me... And you stood there. You heard every single word."

From the middle of the elegant staircase, Eleanor, Julian’s mother, looked down at them. She smoothed the front of her designer dress, her lips curling into a smug, venomous sneer. She felt entirely untouchable in her domain.

"Know your place, girl," Eleanor sneered, her voice dripping with condescension. "You never belonged to this family, and you never will."

But before Julian could utter another word of agreement, a deafening crash echoed through the foyer. The massive, heavy double oak doors of the mansion were violently thrown open, slamming against the walls.
