The Legacy in the Stone

The Whispering Gorge was a place where the wind always sounded like a dying breath. For a hundred years, the legendary Sword of the Dawn had remained embedded in a cracked, moss-covered monolith, defying the strength of every warlord, knight, and king who dared to try their hand. Today, the fog hung low and heavy, clinging to the dark iron plate armor of Lord Borin as he stood before the ancient relic.

Borin was a giant of a man, renowned across the northern reaches for his brutal strength. He spat onto his calloused palms, gripped the leather-wrapped hilt of the sword, and planted his heavy boots against the base of the stone. With a guttural roar that echoed off the damp ravine walls, he pulled. The veins in his neck bulged like thick ropes, and his face turned a deep, dangerous crimson. Yet, the blade did not budge even a fraction of an inch.

"If I couldn't pull it out, no one can," Borin grumbled, releasing his grip and wiping the sweat from his brow. He turned to his armored comrades, his pride wounded. "This prophecy is nothing but a fairy tale to mock honest men."

But from the shadows of the giant warriors stepped Arthur, a small, dirt-streaked youth clad in a ragged grey tunic. He was merely a stable boy, dragged along to tend to the horses, but his eyes were fixed on the glowing pommel. Ignoring the snickers and mocking jests of the knights, Arthur stepped up to the cracked stone. He looked up at the hilt, feeling a strange, magnetic warmth radiating from the metal.

"I am Arthur," he said, his voice barely a whisper yet carrying a quiet, undeniable resolve. "And I am going to claim you."

As his smudged, calloused hand firmly gripped the leather handle, the air grew deathly still. The knights froze, their laughter dying in their throats as a soft, golden hum began to resonate from deep within the earth.
