The subterranean air of the city subway was always thick and stifling, but on this particular Tuesday evening, it felt completely suffocating to twenty-four-year-old Lily. Clad in an oversized, worn maroon zip-up hoodie, she sat huddled in a corner seat of the dimly lit carriage. Every rattle of the train car sent a wave of nausea through her fragile frame. Just hours prior, she had undergone her third aggressive round of chemotherapy. Her body was a battlefield, and right now, she was losing the fight against a bone-deep, soul-crushing fatigue.

She had closed her eyes, desperate to block out the harsh fluorescent lights and the indifferent chatter of the evening commuters. All she wanted was to reach her stop without collapsing. But her fragile peace was abruptly shattered when a shadow loomed over her, accompanied by a sharp, demanding voice.

An Unwarranted Confrontation

“Don’t you know you should yield your seat to an elderly person?”

Lily slowly opened her eyes. Standing directly in front of her was Margaret, an elegant older woman. Margaret was the picture of refined privilege, wearing wire-rimmed glasses, a perfectly tailored wool coat, and a vibrant patterned scarf. Her finger was pointed accusingly at Lily, her face twisted in a scowl of deep disapproval.

Lily felt a hot wave of shame wash over her. She looked around the carriage, but the surrounding passengers quickly averted their eyes, unwilling to get involved in a public dispute. With what little strength she had left, Lily whispered,

“I’m tired.”

The simple, honest plea only seemed to infuriate Margaret further. She sneered, her voice carrying over the rumble of the train.

“That is no excuse. You are rude, selfish, and have absolutely no manners. Young people today think the world revolves around them.”

The sting of the public humiliation was too much to bear. Tears welled in Lily’s eyes. Unable to defend herself with words, she reached up with trembling fingers and slowly pulled back her maroon hood, letting it fall to her shoulders. Beneath it, her head was completely bald, pale, and marked with the faint blue ink of radiation guides. The carriage fell into a stunned, breathless silence.
