The Twilight Encounter

The wind at the Blackwood border crossing always carried the scent of dry pine and incoming rain. For Officer Jack, the remote dirt road was a lonely post, a place where the hours dragged under a gray sky. He adjusted his heavy leather gloves, his dusty navy uniform stiff against the evening chill. It was twilight, the hour when the shadows stretched long and thin across the gravel path, and Jack was preparing to lock the wooden barrier for the night.

That was when he heard it—the rhythmic, metallic squeak of a poorly oiled bicycle chain. He looked up to see a frail figure emerging from the dust. It was Martha, an elderly woman with silver hair peeking out from beneath a gray headscarf. She was pushing a heavy, rusted bicycle, her boots caked in dried mud. Draped over the back frame was a coarse burlap sack, tied tightly with rough twine.

Jack stepped forward, his hand resting instinctively near his belt.

“Stop right there, ma’am,”
he said, his voice echoing in the quiet evening.
“What’s in the sack?”

Martha halted, her chest heaving from exertion. She looked up at him, her pale blue eyes wide with a nervous intensity that immediately set off alarm bells in Jack’s mind.

“Just wheat, officer,”
she whispered, her voice trembling.
“Just some dry wheat from my small plot of land.”

Jack walked over to the bicycle. He untied the rough twine and plunged his gloved hand deep into the coarse fabric. The dry grains slipped through his fingers, cool and ordinary. He scooped a handful, letting it trickle back into the dark bag. There was nothing but wheat. Yet, looking at Martha’s terrified face, Jack felt a strange, lingering doubt. He patted the sack closed and sighed.

“Alright. Go ahead,”
Jack said, lifting the heavy wooden barrier. He watched in silence as she wheeled her bicycle down the quiet dirt path, disappearing into the dimming light. But the suspicion remained, a cold knot tightening in his chest.
