The Myth in the Stone

The damp air of the high canyon clung to the stone walls like a cold sweat. For centuries, the split boulder had held the ancient blade, a weapon forged in the fires of a forgotten era. Many had come to claim it, but all had failed, leaving only their shattered pride behind. Today, Borin, the kingdom's most decorated champion, stood before the monolith. His soot-stained plate armor clanked heavily as he stepped forward, his massive chest heaving with anticipation.

With a guttural roar, Borin gripped the leather-wrapped hilt. His knuckles turned white, and the veins in his thick neck bulged as he poured every ounce of his legendary strength into the effort. The sword did not budge. Not a single spark of magic flared. Stumbling back, exhausted and humiliated, Borin spat into the dirt and glared at his troop of elite soldiers.

"If I couldn't pull it out, no one can," he grumbled, his voice echoing off the narrow canyon walls.

The men murmured in agreement, ready to turn back. But then, a quiet figure stepped forward from the rear of the baggage train. It was Arthur, a thin, dirt-flecked young man who served as the troop's lowliest stable hand. His worn tunic was frayed at the edges, and his hands were calloused from hard labor. Yet, as he looked up at the legendary weapon, there was no fear in his eyes.

"I am Arthur," he said, his voice carrying a strange, resonant authority that silenced the crowd. "And I am going to claim you."

Borin laughed, a harsh, mocking sound, but Arthur ignored him. He reached out, his grubby hand closing around the hilt. The moment his fingers made contact, the cold steel began to hum with a deep, ancient power.
