The Boy in the Shadow

The autumn wind in Boston was exceptionally crisp that Tuesday morning, carrying the scent of fallen leaves and distant saltwater. Victoria adjusted the collar of her double-breasted grey coat, her gloved hand holding tightly onto her seven-year-old son, Nicholas. He was dressed in his neat little school suit, chatting excitedly about his upcoming science class. To anyone passing by, they were the picture of a happy, affluent family. But in a single heartbeat, that picture-perfect reality shattered into a million pieces.

As they walked past a row of historic brick buildings, Nicholas suddenly halted. His grip on Victoria’s hand tightened, his small fingers digging into her palm.

"Mom, look,"
he whispered, pointing his finger toward a dark, recessed alcove of a closed storefront.
"That boy... he looks exactly like me."

Victoria smiled gently, expecting to see a child with a passing resemblance, perhaps the same hair color or height. But as she followed her son’s gaze and lowered her designer sunglasses, her breath caught in her throat. Sitting on a damp piece of cardboard was a young boy shivering in a dirty, oversized hoodie. His light brown hair was tangled and his face was smudged with soot, but his features were unmistakable.

He had the exact same jawline, the same nose, and the same deep blue eyes as Nicholas. He was a mirror image, a ghost from a past Victoria thought had been buried seven years ago. Seeing the wealthy woman staring, the disheveled boy reached into his pocket and pulled out a tarnished gold locket. With trembling fingers, he snapped it open and held it out.

Inside the locket were two tiny, identical baby photos. Under one photo, the name Nicholas was written in faint blue ink; under the other, the name Sebastian. Victoria fell to her knees on the cold concrete, tears streaming down her face. Nicholas began to cry, tugging at her coat.

"Mom, tell me what this means. Why does he have my face?"
