Ethan adjusted the collar of his heavy dark grey parka as the bitter Montana wind whipped across the frozen expanse of the lake. The sky was a bruised, heavy grey, threatening another blizzard, and the distant evergreen forest looked like dark teeth against the horizon. He had come out to check his perimeter, but the silence of the wilderness was suddenly shattered by a sound that made him freeze. It was a desperate, high-pitched whimper.

He followed the sound toward the center of the lake, his boots crunching softly on the snow-dusted ice. There, in a jagged hole of black, swirling water, was a wolf. She was a beautiful, silver-furred creature, but she was drowning. Her paws clawed frantically at the slick edges of the ice, only for it to break away, plunging her deeper into the freezing depths. Her amber eyes met Ethan’s, filled with an raw, intelligent terror.

A Desperate Rescue

Ethan didn’t hesitate. He knew the ice was unstable, but he couldn't let her die. Dropping to his knees, he crawled slowly toward the edge of the hole, hearing the ice groan beneath his weight. He reached out his gloved hands.

"Come on, come on, you can do it!" Ethan shouted, his voice cracking in the freezing air.

He grabbed her wet, freezing front paws. The wolf bared her teeth in a momentary instinct of defense, but as Ethan pulled, she seemed to understand. He strained every muscle in his back, his boots slipping on the slick surface. With a final, roaring effort, he dragged her heavy, sodden body out of the water. The momentum sent him flying backward onto the hard ice.

He lay there, gasping for breath, his chest heaving. Beside him, the wolf collapsed, shivering violently. But their shared moment of relief was cut short. Through the thick winter mist, several dark shapes began to emerge from the tree line. The pack was coming.
