The Reading of the Will

The air in the grand dining room of the Harrison estate was thick with tension. Under the warm glow of the brass pendant lights, the family sat around the long rosewood table, but there was no warmth to be found. My father had passed away only a week ago, and already, the wolves were circling. My stepmother, Eleanor, sat at the head of the table in her velvet jacket, her gold earrings catching the light as she looked at me with cold, calculating eyes.

'You have twenty-four hours to pack your bags and leave, Clara,' she said coldly. 'This house belongs to me now.'

My heart shattered. The betrayal of my stepfamily was a suffocating weight. Unable to bear their smug, silent stares, I slammed my hands on the rosewood table and ran toward the patio doors. Tears streamed down my face as Eleanor’s voice echoed behind me, shouting firmly, 'Get out of my house!'

I stumbled onto the patio, holding my burning cheek in the cool night air. I felt completely abandoned. But before I could reach the gates, a tall, silver-haired figure stepped into the light. It was Richard, my father’s trusted lifelong executor, dressed in a sharp navy suit. He held a thick, red leather binder in his hands.

'Your father left you this, Clara,' Richard said gently, handing me the binder. 'Your father bequeathed this in his last will. This house has been yours for years.'

With trembling fingers, I opened the binder. Inside was a deed of transfer, signed and sealed on my twenty-fifth birthday. My father had protected me from their greed all along. Richard walked past me, marching back into the dining room. He slammed the documents onto the table before the stunned family. I walked back in, standing tall as I looked at Eleanor and her children. 'Were all of you taking from him?' I demanded, my voice steady with a newfound strength.
