The air in the Fort Meade gym always smelled of iron, sweat, and old rubber. For Captain Vanessa Vance, it was a sanctuary—a place where she could shed the heavy burdens of her rank and simply push her physical limits. She had purposely requested a low-profile assignment at the base, wanting to evaluate the morale and discipline of the junior recruits without the intimidating shadow of her father’s four-star general status. On this particular Tuesday, she had just finished a brutal five-mile run on the treadmill. She sat on a worn bench, her auburn hair secured in a tight, sweat-dampened braid, wearing her standard-issue green tank top and dark camo pants.

She took a long, slow sip of cold blue sports drink from her bottle, letting the cool liquid soothe her parched throat. That was when the shadow fell over her. Before she could even turn her head, a cold, sticky deluge erupted over her skull.

"Hey, new girl, looks like you need to cool down!" a loud, mocking voice boomed.

It was Specialist Connor, a notoriously arrogant soldier who took pleasure in hazing anyone he perceived as lower in the pecking order. He stood there shirtless, holding her empty bottle, roaring with laughter as his buddies joined in. The blue liquid dripped down Vanessa’s forehead, soaking her eyelashes and staining her green tank top.

She didn't flinch. She didn't scream. With terrifying calmness, Vanessa raised her hand and wiped the blue dye from her eyes. Standing up slowly, she closed the distance between them until she was staring directly into Connor's smug face.

"You're going to regret that," she whispered, her voice cold as ice.

Her hand reached down and gripped the silver eagle dog tag resting against her chest. As the polished silver glinted under the harsh overhead lights, Connor’s smug smile instantly froze. He recognized the rare emblem immediately. It was the personal crest of General Vance. The realization hit him like a physical blow, and the color drained from his face as absolute dread set in.
