The winter wind howled down the empty city avenue, carrying with it a flurry of heavy snow that blanketed the concrete in a cold, white sheet. Inside the warmth of the Golden Crumb Bakery, Rachel was preparing to close up for the night. She wiped down the counters, her mind drifting to her own quiet, lonely apartment. But as she glanced out the large plate-glass window, her heart skipped a beat.

Underneath the flickering neon sign of the bakery, huddled against the freezing brick wall, were two small figures. Rachel pressed her face against the glass to see clearer. A young boy in an oversized grey hood was wrapping his arms tightly around a smaller girl. The little girl, wearing a blue knitted hat, was shivering uncontrollably, wrapped in a worn checkered blanket that offered little protection against the sub-zero temperatures.

Without a second thought, Rachel grabbed a tray. She poured two generous bowls of steaming tomato soup, added a basket of warm, crusty bread, and rushed out into the freezing night. The biting air hit her face, but she didn't care. She walked quickly over to the children and knelt down on the snowy sidewalk, placing the warm tray between them.

"Wait. This is for you. You shouldn't be out here in this cold," Rachel said softly, her voice a gentle contrast to the howling wind.

The boy stared at the steaming bowls in absolute disbelief. He rubbed his cold-reddened nose, his eyes wide.

"For me? Really?" he asked, his voice trembling.
"For both of you," Rachel promised, reaching out to gently adjust the checkered blanket around the shivering little girl. "Tonight you are not alone."

The boy looked up at her, a tear finally escaping and freezing on his cheek.

"No one has ever stopped for us before," he whispered.

Rachel smiled warmly, but as her fingers adjusted the blanket, she noticed a detail that made her blood run cold.
