The air inside Sterling & Co. was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and polished mahogany. Lily adjusted the collar of her worn gray trench coat, feeling acutely conscious of how out of place she was among the glittering glass display cases. Beneath her coat, resting against her collarbone, was a breathtaking diamond necklace. It was the only thing her mother had left her before passing away a month ago, along with a cryptic note instructing her to bring it here.

Summoning her courage, Lily unbuttoned her coat to let the piece breathe. Immediately, the brilliant diamonds caught the bright, clinical lighting of the showroom, casting dazzling fractals across the room.

A sharp gasp cut through the quiet hum of the boutique.

"Where did you get that?" a voice demanded.

Lily turned to find Eleanor, a wealthy regular customer dressed in an immaculate, tailored navy blue pantsuit. Eleanor’s face was pale with shock, her eyes locked onto the necklace. Before Lily could stammer an explanation, Eleanor lunged.

With shocking aggression, Eleanor grabbed the necklace and ripped it from Lily’s neck. The delicate platinum chain snapped with a sharp metallic pop, and loose diamonds scattered across the glass counter like frozen teardrops. Lily fell to her knees, clutching her throat as hot tears spilled over her cheeks.

Eleanor stood over her triumphantly, holding the broken piece high for the onlookers.

"Did you really think you could come in here wearing something you could never afford?" she sneered.

"Enough."

The commanding voice belonged to Richard, the store’s distinguished owner, who stepped between them. He looked down at Eleanor with cold fury.

"That necklace was made especially for her mother before she passed away."
